Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence “fEUture”

The eCampus Online University was selected under the European Union’s Jean Monnet Action 2023 (Call: ERASMUS-JMO-2023-HEI-TCH-RSCH – Topic: ERASMUS-JMO-2023-COE). This call, part of the Jean Monnet – Erasmus+ Programme, supports the establishment of Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence within selected higher education institutions, promoting cooperation among different faculties or departments while involving other organisations specialising in European Union studies.

Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence serve as focal points of expertise and knowledge on EU-related issues. They bring together the experience and expertise of leading scholars to foster interdisciplinary synergies in European studies. They also play a key role in engaging students from faculties that do not normally address EU-related topics, as well as policymakers, civil society organisations, and the wider public. In addition, they provide experts with opportunities to develop joint transnational activities.

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at eCampus University, “fEUture”, is coordinated by Prof. Roberto Castaldi. The Centre focuses its activities on the legacy of the Conference on the Future of Europe, promoting research and outreach initiatives aimed at engaging academics (including those from disciplines not traditionally associated with EU studies), students, stakeholders, and representatives of civil society.

On 24–25 September, the third international conference, “The Follow-Up of the Conference on the Future of Europe: Translating Citizens’ Proposals into Law and Treaty Reform,” will take place at the eCampus University campus in Novedrate.

The conference aims to foster debate among academics, researchers, experts, and policymakers on the implementation of the recommendations emerging from the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE), the first large-scale experiment in participatory democracy at the European level, held in 2021.

The Conference produced a comprehensive set of proposals covering nine policy areas—including climate, the economy, democracy, and migration—which the European Parliament sought to translate into Treaty reform through resolutions adopted in November 2023 and November 2025. To date, these proposals have not been acted upon by the Council.

The conference programme will include a policy panel featuring institutional speakers, organised in cooperation with Focus Europe Italia, alongside a series of academic panels open to papers selected through an international call for papers.

Programme: under preparation.

Teaching European Active Multilevel Citizenship Education (TEAMCE)

The TEAMCE project was established to address the gap in Italian teachers’ training on European integration, with the objective of making knowledge of the European Union a structural component of teacher education.

The project targets three main groups:

  • approximately 2,900 undergraduate students enrolled in Education and Pedagogy degree programmes;
  • more than 15,000 prospective teachers attending postgraduate master’s programmes and professional training courses;
  • at least 2,400 in-service teachers through the SOFIA platform of the Italian Ministry of Education.

The educational programme is organised at three levels:

  • 1 ECTS modules integrated into core undergraduate courses;
  • a 3 ECTS module on European citizenship for postgraduate programmes;
  • 12 short professional development courses on the SOFIA platform, tailored to different school subjects and educational levels.

The project is implemented by three partners:

  • the RECIPE Research Centre at eCampus University (project coordinator);
  • CesUE, a spin-off of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, which will host all educational materials in open access on the Educivica.eu platform for at least ten years;
  • Focus Europe Italia, acting as the project’s media partner.

European Values: Universities and Schools Working Together to Build a European Civic Education Pathway

The eCampus Online University was selected under the European Union’s Jean Monnet Action 2022 (Call: ERASMUS-JMO-2022-NETWORKS – Topic: ERASMUS-JMO-2022-NETWORKS-SCHOOLS). This call, within the Jean Monnet – Erasmus+ Programme, promotes education, communication, and debate on European institutions and the European dimension of citizenship.

The project is coordinated by Prof. Roberto Castaldi and builds upon the Research Centre’s extensive experience in education, research, and communication on the European integration process at both national and European levels.

CesUE, a spin-off of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, is a project partner and will organise a series of events in cooperation with participating schools. These activities include a workshop for upper secondary school students entitled “Communicating Europe”, organised in collaboration with EURACTIV Italia, the leading multilingual European media network.

EUact: Active Learning for Active European Citizenship

The eCampus Online University ranked among the top projects in Europe under the Jean Monnet Projects 2017 call of the European Union. The Jean Monnet – Erasmus+ Programme supports educational activities, communication, and public debate on European institutions and the European dimension of citizenship.

The project is coordinated by Dr. Francesco Pigozzo, with Prof. Roberto Castaldi serving as Deputy Coordinator. It builds upon the Research Centre’s long-standing expertise in education, research, and communication on the European integration process.

CesUE, a spin-off of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, is a project partner. It contributed the theatrical performance “Europe: What a Passion! The Story of a Troubled Love Affair,” written by Daniela Martinelli and Francesco Pigozzo, together with the technical expertise required to organise the European Awareness Days in cinemas across the eleven Italian cities where eCampus University has campuses.
